Launched in 2007, the Green Schools Alliance began as a grassroots network of 46 independent schools in NYC with a common mission to meet Mayor Bloomberg’s challenge to reduce their carbon emissions by 30% by 2050.

The Alliance has since evolved into a worldwide community of faculty, staff, administrators, students, parents and allies working collaboratively across geographic and socioeconomic borders to accelerate the green schools movement.

"Going green means so many things to different people, and despite our genuine commitment to sustainability, we were having difficulty focusing our efforts. Working with the Alliance has allowed us to find a community of like-minded schools and set challenging, but reasonable, goals."

– Julian P. Bull, Headmaster, Campbell Hall School, CA.

The Green Schools Alliance has developed programs to engage the whole school community to lead the transition to a sustainable future.

With an engaged community driven to create measurable change, a clear need emerged.
Schools came to us asking three prominent questions:

Where do we start our sustainability journey?

How do we benchmark our sustainability efforts?

What more can we do?

To meet this need, the Green Schools Alliance developed the first sustainability benchmarking tool designed specifically for K-12 schools: START, Sustainability Tracking and Roadmap Tool.

START redefines how schools approach education and action by providing a clear, step-by-step framework for Whole School Sustainability, enabling schools to:

  • Measure their progress.

  • Collaborate with team members.

  • Share best practices with other schools.

  • Access action-based resources.

  • Engage students in sustainable solutions.

  • Celebrate their success.

Created by schools, for schools, START is game-changing tool that structures, simplifies and supports the journey towards Whole School Sustainability.

Green Schools Alliance envisions a world where every person is aware of and accountable for the impact they have in creating an environmentally, economically, and equitably sustainable future.
