Bright Ideas for Schools - Did You Know?

The GSA is bringing together public/private partners with schools nationwide to provide low-cost compact fluorescent lights (CFL) that can be sold by students to raise awareness and money for environmental school projects. It's a great way to launch a Kid’s Committee On The Environment or a kid’s after school environmental program.

FACT: The average U.S. residential household uses 908 kilowatt hours per month (kw/h/mo).

FACT: A Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb (CFL) with brightness equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb pays for itself in energy savings in less than a year.

cflFACT: If every household in the U.S. replaced just ONE 100-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL, over the bulb's lifetime:

We would save enough energy to power more than 1 million U.S. homes from an entire year. In each year of the CFL's life, we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as keeping 1.5 million cars off the road for a year.

FACT: The Benefits of CFLs include:

Energy savings of 70-75%
Last up to 10x longer than incandescent bulbs
Cost less than 1/3 as much to operate annually as traditional incandescent bulbs and provide same or greater brightness.
Turn on without flickering
Many last longer than 5 years
One compact fluorescent will outlast up to 10 of these standard lights:

10 lights
